Understand people, activation and retention
What each people figure counts and how to read the retention table.
In short
The people figures count accounts or members, newcomers, who got going, who was active and how often. The retention table shows how many of each week's newcomers came back in their 1st, 4th and 12th week.
Before you start
- Who: "See analytics" in an organization; a site admin sees the platform.
- Plan: Analytics is part of every plan, Free included.
- First: set the period. Retention needs a period that starts early enough for Week 4 and Week 12 to be over.
Steps
- Open "Analytics", choose "Usage" in the dashboard switcher and set the period.
- Read the people figures and the Active people per day chart.
- Scroll to Retention and read each joining week across its Week 1, Week 4 and Week 12 columns.
People figures
Retention
Retention groups the period's newcomers by the week they joined. A week that has not ended yet says Not yet rather than a number that would look like a drop.
Example Twenty people signed up in the week of 6 October and twelve came back in the week of 13 October, so Week 1 is 60%. Week 4 and Week 12 fill in once those weeks are over.
Good to know
- Activated's note gives the share among those whose seven days are over.
- Active people per day draws the previous period as a second line when comparing, so a quiet weekend is read against the weekend before.
- Choose a period that starts further back to see Week 4 and Week 12 sooner.
If something goes wrong
- Activated says the module records no first action: the module filter names a module without one. Choose All modules or a module people create things in.
