Have AI draft a feature's design and approve it

AI draws the screens, APIs and tables from the card's sentence. A person checks the draft and approves it with their password.

In short

In Design, AI drafts the screens, APIs and tables for a feature from its one sentence, inside the design connected to the board. When it is unsure, it asks up to three questions. A person always approves the design. {{brand}} never approves it for you.

Before you start

• The board needs a design connected under "Connected to the product flow". See /help/boards/start-a-product-board.
• Who: you need the right to change cards. To approve, you also need to manage the design in the Designer.
• Cost: the draft uses AI. Its cost is recorded on the card. See /help/boards/ai-usage-and-cost.

Steps

1. Open the Feature card and its "Design & plan" tab.
2. Press "Design it". If the row "AI drafts the design" is Automatic, the draft starts when the card enters Design.
3. If the next step says "Answer the AI's questions", press "Answer the questions", pick an answer or write "Your own answer", and press "Send the answers".
4. Read "Parts". Each screen, API or table is marked "Added", "Changed" or "Removed". Press "Open in Designer" to change anything.
5. When it looks right, press "Approve design", type "Your password" and press "Approve design" again.

Result: the status reads "Approved", and the card is ready to be planned.

Who can approve

• The Designer asks for your password again for every approval. Leave it empty only if you sign in through your company's sign-in.
• In an organization, the person who asked for the draft cannot approve it. Another person who manages the design does.
• Some designs need two approvers. The card says "Waiting for another approver" until the second yes.
• A Quick card normally skips the design, because "AI drafts the design" is Off.

Change a design after approval

1. When the design changes, the card says "Changed after approval".
2. Press "Review the impact" to see the design parts, tasks, checks and open pull requests the change touches.
3. Press "Accept the change".

Result: the plan follows the new design. The agent reads it on its next read. Work already merged becomes a follow-up task, never a silent rewrite.

Good to know

• The draft is a proposal. Nothing is built from it until a person approves it.
• Choose "Ask me" for "AI drafts the design" to press "Design it" yourself, or "Off" to draw in the Designer.
• What happens next: the card moves to Plan, or {{brand}} asks first when that row says "Ask me". See /help/boards/plan-a-feature.

If something goes wrong

• "The Designer could not answer" - try again in a moment.
• "The draft was refused" - AI may be off for this workspace or the Designer. Ask an administrator, or draw the design yourself.
• "No design connected" - a board manager connects one under "Connected to the product flow".
• "Another approver is needed" - ask someone else who manages the design to approve.
