Work faster with keys and quick create
Move through cards with single keys and make a card from one typed line.
In short
On a board, single keys move between cards and change them: J and K to move, A to assign, M to move, D for the due date. A card typed as one line - "Fix login @ada #bug due Friday !high" - gets its owner, type, due day and priority from the line.
Before you start
- Who: J, K, the arrow keys, Shift+F10, ?, / and Enter work for anyone who can open the board. A, M, D and quick create need "Change cards".
- Plan: every plan.
- First: single keys need single-key shortcuts to be on (the account menu's keyboard shortcuts). The arrow keys and Shift+F10 work with them off too.
Steps
- Press ? on a board to see the list.
- Press J or K to move to the next or previous card.
- Press A, M or D to open a small dialog for the card with focus, pick the "Owner", the "Column" or the "Due date", and press Enter.
- On the "Board" layout, press Tab to reach a column, then the arrow keys to move between its cards and to the columns beside it. Shift+F10, or the menu key, opens the focused card's … menu.
- In a column's add-a-card box, or the "Add card" dialog, type a line such as Fix login @ada #bug due Friday !high.
- Read the line under the box: it reads back what will be set - Owner, Due, Priority, Type.
- Press Enter.
Result: a message with "Undo" follows a key change, as after a drag; a quick-created card is made with its owner, type, due day and priority in one step.
What a typed line sets
Good to know
- Single keys work only while you are not typing, no dialog is open and single-key shortcuts are on. Turn them off in the account menu's keyboard shortcuts.
- A, M and D change the card, so they need permission to change cards. Leave the due date empty to clear it.
- On the timeline, the arrow keys move a focused bar a day.
- Every list and table in the product answers the same keys: J and K (or the arrows) move between rows, X or Space selects a row, and Enter opens it.
- Nothing happens by surprise: you can still change the card afterwards.
- Single keys need a keyboard. On a touch screen use the card's … menu and the dialogs; quick create works with the on-screen keyboard.
- What happens next: the card gets what the line read back, and an assigned owner is notified as for any assignment.
If something goes wrong
- A key does nothing: you are typing in a box, a dialog is open, or single-key shortcuts are off.
- The line says a person was not found, for example "Nobody called @sam works on this board": check the name, or write it in quotes.
