Move, archive and restore a board
Move a board between workspaces, file it under a team, and put cards or boards aside and bring them back.
In short
A board lives in one workspace: your Personal Workspace or an organization. You can move it to another workspace and file it under a team. Archiving puts a card or a board aside without deleting it, and restoring brings it back.
Before you start
- Who: moving a board needs Manage on it and "Create and manage boards" in the destination organization. Archiving a card needs "Change cards"; archiving or restoring an organization board needs "Create and manage boards".
- Plan: the destination workspace needs room for the board and its cards on its plan.
- First: read who will lose the board. The move screen lists them before you confirm.
Steps
- Open Board settings, then "Who can see and work here?".
- Choose "Move to", pick the destination and choose "Move". The screen says who loses the board before you confirm.
- To file it under a team again, use "Team" in the same tab.
- To archive a card, open its … menu and choose "Archive". To find it again, open the board's … menu, then "Archived cards…", and choose "Restore".
- To archive the whole board, choose "Archive board" in the board's … menu. Restore it from "Archived boards…" on the Boards list.
Result: a restored card goes back to the column it left, with its tags.
Good to know
- Moving needs the right to manage the board where it is now, the boards manage permission in the destination, and room in the destination's plan.
- Leaving an organization takes the board from everyone there, including their work on it.
- A board never arrives wider than it was: one that was private, or open only to a team it leaves behind, arrives private.
- A move clears the team the board was filed under.
- Archiving or restoring an organization board needs the manage permission.
- Nothing on a board is permanently deleted from the board screens. If a card or board disappears, look in "Archived cards…" or "Archived boards…" before recreating it.
- What happens next: people who lose a board find it gone from their lists, search, Home and inbox at once. An archived board or card is kept, not deleted, and can be restored.
- To undo: restore from "Archived boards…" or "Archived cards…". A move is undone by moving the board back, if you can manage it there.
If something goes wrong
- "A board that mirrors another module's record stays in the workspace it was opened in.": a hiring board cannot move.
- "A legacy project-tracking board cannot be moved."
- "Only an organization board can belong to a team - move the board into an organization first."
- The destination's plan has no room: archive a board there, or change its plan.
