Write, reply, attach and react
Send messages, reply in threads, attach files and records, react, pin, edit and delete.
In short
A conversation is where you write, reply and share. You can attach files and records, react with an emoji, pin what matters and reply in a thread to keep a side topic apart. Every member of the conversation reads everything in it.
Before you start
- Who: every member of a conversation reads and writes in it. Only Owners and Admins of a group delete other people's messages.
- Plan: a file counts against the storage of the conversation's workspace and must fit the plan's largest-file limit (see /help/settings/storage-limits).
- First: open a conversation.
Steps
- Open the conversation from the list.
- Type in the box at the bottom. Enter sends; Shift+Enter starts a new line; @name mentions a member; starts a code block.
- To add a file, press "Attach a file" or drop the file on the conversation. Wait for it to finish uploading.
- Press "Send".
- Hover over a message and press "Reply in thread".
- Write in the thread panel and send. The message shows "N replies" in the main timeline.
- Press "Close thread" to go back to the whole conversation.
- In the message box, press "Attach a record".
- Choose the record type (for example an API Tester request, a SQL Tester run, a UI Tester run, a cache check or a board card) and search for it.
- Pick a result. It waits above the box as a chip. Press "Send", alone or with text.
Result: your message appears in the timeline for every member; your own messages show "N read" as members open the conversation.
Good to know
- A message needs text (up to 5,000 characters), a file or a record. You can send 60 messages a minute.
- If your connection drops, the message shows "Sending…" and then "Not sent" with a reason; send it again or press "Discard". Chat never sends the same message twice.
- React with one of the quick reactions under a message; choosing one you already added removes it.
- The message's "More actions" menu has "Quote reply", "Pin" or "Unpin", "Save message" or "Remove from saved", "Copy text", and on your own messages "Edit" and "Delete". On someone else's message it has "Report", which goes to the platform's moderators.
- Any member can pin. "Pinned N" in the header lists the pinned messages.
- The conversation's details have a "Files" tab listing every file sent there, newest first. Press "Download" to save one, or "Show message" to go to the message it came with.
- Saving is yours alone: a saved message shows "Saved", and the bookmark button above the conversation list opens "Saved messages", most recently saved first. Choose one to open it, or "Remove" to take it out - "Undo" on the note that follows puts it back in its place. A message in a conversation you left is no longer listed. Messages in a record's discussion cannot be saved.
- Edited messages show "edited". A deleted message shows "Message deleted" for everyone and cannot be restored, edited, reacted to or pinned.
- Owners and Admins of a group may delete anyone's message there.
- Executable files (.exe, .dll, .bat, .cmd, .ps1, .msi, .com, .scr) are refused. A file counts against the storage of the conversation's workspace.
- Other modules offer "Share to chat" on their records, such as a board card, a vacancy or a test run. The message shows a card with the record's kind, title and, for a test, Passed or Failed. A reader who cannot open the record sees only "Something you cannot open was shared here." Sharing never grants access.
Everyone in the conversation can read it all Do not paste passwords, tokens or keys, or attach files that contain them. Every member, including people added later, can read the whole thread and download every file.
If something goes wrong
- "A message needs text, an attachment or a shared item, and text cannot exceed 5,000 characters." Shorten the text or split it into two messages.
- "Executable attachments are not allowed." Programs and scripts cannot be attached. Share a link to where the file lives instead.
- "An attachment can be at most" a size: the file is larger than your plan allows. Send a smaller file.
- "You can only share something you can open yourself." Ask for access to the record first.
- "Wait for the files to finish uploading": the file is still uploading. Wait, then press "Send".
- "Not sent: you can't message this person." One of you blocked the other.
