Comment on a design

Pin a comment to a design, a part, a step or a connection, reply in a thread, mention people and resolve it when it is settled.

In short

A comment is a note pinned to the whole design, a part, a step or a connection. People reply in a thread, and someone marks it resolved when it is settled. Comments are for talking about what the drawing shows. They are separate from the design discussion and from questions that end in a decision.

Before you start

• Who: Inside a design your level decides the rest: View opens it, Comment adds comments, Edit changes it and Manage shares it and deletes it. Comments need Comment level or higher.
• Plan: Designer is part of every plan, Free included. The Free plan limits how many designs a workspace keeps; Plan & usage shows the limit and what you hold.
• First: nothing.

Steps

1. Select a part, step or connection and press "Comment" in the inspector. To comment on the whole design, choose "Review" and then "Comments".
2. In "Write a comment", type your words. Press "Mention someone" to name a person who can open the design.
3. Press "Comment". The people you mentioned are told in their inbox, and the part shows a badge with its open comments.

1. Choose "Review" and then "Comments". Choose "Open", "On me", "Resolved" or "On the selection" to filter the threads.
2. Press "Show" on a thread to select what it is about. Write in "Write a reply" and press "Reply".
3. Press "Resolve" when the question is settled. Press "Reopen" to bring it back.

Result: a resolved thread leaves "Open" and its author is told. The badge on the part counts only the threads still open.

Who can do what

Choose "Comment" in "Share" for a reviewer who should react but not change the drawing. The editor then shows "Can comment".

Good to know

• Only the person who wrote a comment edits it. The author, or someone who manages the design, removes it. Removing the first comment of a thread removes its replies too, and Undo in the message brings them all back.
• A comment mentions at most 20 people, and only people who can open the design.
• "On me" lists the open threads you started, replied in or were mentioned in. Its number counts them.
• A design holds at most 500 open threads. Resolve some to write more.
• You are told when someone mentions you, when someone replies in a thread you took part in and when someone resolves your comment. Choose Instant, Digest or Muted for Designer in your notification settings.
• The panel looks for new comments every 30 seconds and after each change you make.
• Asking a question about a step needs View only. Questions keep decisions; comments are for talk. See /help/designer/questions-and-decisions.
• A thread whose part was removed says "no longer in the design". Its words stay.

If something goes wrong

• "You can view this design but not comment on it. Ask someone who manages it for Comment."
• "Mention someone who can open this design." - share the design with them first.
• "A design holds at most 500 open comment threads. Resolve some first."
• "Only whoever wrote a comment can change it." - write a reply instead.
• "Write the comment first." - the comment box is empty.
