Export a design as a picture, document or diagram text
Save a design as PNG or SVG, as a PDF, Word or Markdown document, as Mermaid text or as a file to import again.
In short
Export saves a design outside the Designer: as a picture, as a document for people who do not use it, as diagram text or as a file to bring back. One menu holds every choice, for the design alone or with the designs it links to.
Before you start
- Who: anyone who can open the design.
- Plan: Designer is part of every plan, Free included. The Free plan limits how many designs a workspace keeps; Plan & usage shows the limit and what you hold.
- First: nothing. The export is of the saved design.
Steps
- Open the design and press "Export".
- Choose from "Picture", "Documentation", "Diagram as code" or, for a workflow, "Tests".
- Wait for "Preparing the export…". The file is saved to your device.
What each choice gives you
Good to know
- Each design in a PDF or Word file starts with "Picture of the design". In the PDF the picture stays sharp at any size.
- A design's documentation ends with a table "Requirement IDs, tags and properties" for the parts or steps that carry any, and a "Requirements" table when the design lists requirements.
- Linked designs are the workflows it runs, the designs it refers to and the architectures that draw its components. Only those you may open are included, up to 20.
- You can export a design you can open. Nothing changes in the design.
- A scheduled "Design contents" email reads the design as it is saved when it is sent, and reaches only people who may open the design.
- What happens next: the file is saved to your device and nothing is sent to anyone. A file outside {{brand}} follows no access rule, so check who you pass it to.
If something goes wrong
- "The picture could not be drawn. Try again."
- "Only the first 20 linked designs are included." - export the rest from their own pages.
