Find parts and change many at once
Find parts and steps by name, kind, tag, owner, technology, requirement ID or property, then change all matches in one step.
In short
Find looks through the names, kinds, tags, owners, technologies, requirement IDs and properties of a design. You walk the matches one by one, select them all, or change them all at once. A bulk change is one step: one Undo takes it all back.
Before you start
- Who: finding needs View. Changing many at once needs Edit.
- Plan: Designer is part of every plan, Free included. The Free plan limits how many designs a workspace keeps; Plan & usage shows the limit and what you hold.
- First: nothing.
Steps
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) on the canvas, or choose "Show" and then "Find and changeā¦".
- Type in "Find parts and steps". Under "Look in", keep "Everything" or choose one field, such as "Tag" or "Requirement ID".
- Press Enter or "Next match" to walk the matches. Press Shift+Enter or "Previous match" to go back. "Select all" selects every match.
- To narrow by more than one field, choose a field, type the words and press "Keep as filter". The words become a chip such as "Tag: pci", and the search must match it too. Press the chip's x to drop it, or "Clear filters" to drop them all.
- Select the parts or steps to change, or press "Change all" in the find bar to take every match.
- In the inspector press "Change 3 at once". After "Change all" the dialog opens directly.
- Fill in only what should change: "Kind", "Technology", "Owner", "Add tags", "Take away tags", "Add requirement IDs" or "Layer". The rest keeps "Leave as it is".
- Press "Change 3 parts".
Result: all the parts change together. One Undo takes the whole change back.
Good to know
- Find ignores capital letters and accents.
- A kind changes only within its family: a part stays a part and a step stays a step. The dialog lists "Parts" kinds and "Steps" kinds apart.
- Separate tags and requirement IDs with commas.
- Bulk change works on parts and steps. Connections are changed one at a time.
- Finding needs View. Changing needs Edit.
- Filters alone find: with chips kept and nothing typed, every part matching all the chips is a match.
- On a phone the find bar is one full-width row with the field picker and the chips below it.
- In the "Outline", tick the rows you want and use the bar above them: "Change together" opens the same change, "Move into a boundary" files them all at once, and "Delete" removes them. Each is one step for Undo.
If something goes wrong
- "No matches" - try "Everything" under "Look in", or check the spelling.
- "Fill in what should change first." - the dialog has nothing to apply yet.
