Bring in a Figma prototype
Turn the frames and flows of a Figma prototype into a workflow, where your installation has turned this on.
In short
This way in shows only when the operator of your installation has switched it on. It is built off, so "From Figma" is missing from the "Import a design" sheet until the operator turns it on in the installation's settings. The operator is the person or team that runs your installation; if you do not see it, ask them. Once it is on, a Figma prototype can become a workflow. Its frames are the screens a person sees, its prototype flows become journeys and its clicks become the ways between steps.
Before you start
- Who: In an organization you need "Create and change designs" (an Organization Admin, Manager or Member holds it). A Viewer holds "See designs" and can read designs and the catalog. In your Personal Workspace you do everything on your own designs.
- Plan: Designer is part of every plan, Free included. The Free plan limits how many designs a workspace keeps; Plan & usage shows the limit and what you hold. No AI reads Figma content. Each read uses one of your seat's Figma reads.
- First: your installation's operator must have turned this on; if "From Figma" is missing, ask them. You need a Figma link that carries node-id and a personal access token.
Steps
- In Figma, select the page or frame and copy its link. The link must carry node-id.
- On the Designer home press "Import". In the "Import a design" sheet press "From Figma", beside "Choose a file", "Paste text" and "From API Tester". Paste the "Link to a Figma page or frame" and "Your Figma personal access token".
- Press "Read from Figma", check the design and the report, then press "Make the design".
What it reads
Add the system steps and API calls afterwards. A prototype does not hold them.
Good to know
- Your token is used for this one read. It is never kept, logged or shown again. No AI reads Figma content.
- Each read uses one of your seat's Figma reads, about 20 a month on a View or Collab seat.
- Only the page or frame you linked is read, and nothing inside it is fetched.
- Link one frame or a smaller page when Figma's answer is too large to read at once.
- The result keeps the kind it was read as. Switching the type never reads Figma again.
Details for your IT team
- The connector is off by default. The operator turns it on with the setting Designer:FigmaImport:Enabled. Designer:FigmaImport:MonthlyViewSeatReads is the number the form shows, 20 unless changed.
- A read makes exactly one outbound request to Figma's file nodes endpoint, through the guarded outbound client with the token in the request header. Redirects and cookies are off, and the client logs nothing.
- The operator should have Figma's terms of use reviewed before turning it on.
If something goes wrong
- "Bringing in Figma files is switched off on this installation." - ask your operator.
- "Paste the link to a Figma page or frame. Copy it in Figma with the page or frame selected, so it carries node-id."
- "Figma refused the token. Check that it can read this file."
- "Figma has no such file or page, or the token cannot see it."
- "Figma's read limit for your seat is used up. Try again later."
- "This Figma page is too large to read at once. Link one frame or a smaller page."
- "This Figma page has no frames to bring in."
