Ask a question about a step and keep the decision
Ask a named person about a step, answer with words or a link, and accept the answer as a decision kept beside the step and in Notes.
In short
Questions keep the "who decided this, and why?" with the design. Ask a person about a step or the whole design; they answer with words, a message of the discussion or a note. An editor then accepts the answer as a decision: it is shown beside the step, in each card's brief, and in the design's decision note.
Before you start
- Who: asking a question needs View only. Answering needs the person asked to be able to open the design. Accepting a decision is for an editor (Edit).
- Plan: Designer is part of every plan, Free included. The Free plan limits how many designs a workspace keeps; Plan & usage shows the limit and what you hold. Decisions are added to Notes, which is part of every plan.
- First: nothing. Pick the person who knows; they must be able to open the design.
Steps
- Open the design, choose "Review" and then "Questions and decisions" - or select a step and press "Ask about this step".
- Press "Ask a question", choose what it is "About", write "Your question" and choose "Who you ask".
- Press "Ask". They are told in their inbox.
- Open the question and press "Answer".
- Write the answer, or choose "Where it was answered": a message of the discussion or a note about this design.
- Press "Send the answer".
- On an answered question, press "Accept as decision" and adjust the words.
- Choose the "Notebook of the decision note", or "Keep it on the question only".
- Press "Accept as decision".
Result: "Decision accepted and added to the decision note", with "Open the decision note".
Good to know
- The person you ask must be able to open the design.
- On the canvas, a step or part with decisions wears a green chip with how many. Point at it to read the newest decision.
- The notebook is chosen the first time; later decisions join the same note.
- Removing a question takes it off the design and offers Undo. A decision already added to Notes stays there.
- To talk about what the drawing shows, pin a comment to it instead. See /help/designer/design-comments.
If something goes wrong
- "Decision accepted. It was not added to Notes: ..." - the decision is kept on the question; the reason says why Notes refused it.
- "It points at something you cannot open." - the answer links a message or note you do not have access to.
