Create an organization
Start an organization, shape its first teams and find your way around its tabs.
In short
An organization is a group of people who work together: a company, a department, a client. Each member holds a role that says the most they may do, and the organization can be split into teams. While the organization is your workspace, the boards, projects, notebooks, designs, vacancies and Chat groups you create belong to it rather than to you.
Before you start
- Who: anyone signed in can create an organization. You become its owner and an administrator.
- Plan: Organizations is part of every plan, Free included. Your plan sets how many members and teams an organization may hold (Plan & usage shows them). A new organization starts a 14-day Business trial.
- First: nothing. Everything else on the setup screen is optional and can be done later.
Steps
- Open Organizations from the workspace menu and choose "Create organization".
- Type the organization's name and press Enter.
- A short setup offers a logo, your teammates' email addresses and the modules you use. Each is optional - choose "Later" to skip it.
- The new organization opens on "Set up", with two steps you can each skip: "Shape your teams" and "Bring people in".
- Under "Shape your teams", choose one of the choices in the table below.
- Under "Bring people in", invite your teammates. See /help/organizations/invite-people.
Result: you are the owner and an administrator, and your workspace switches to the new organization.
Find your way around
A tab you may not use is not shown. Select a team in the tree to see its members and its own page.
Good to know
- The Organizations page shows invitations under "Waiting for you", organizations whose email domain matches yours under "Colleagues already here", and "Your organizations".
- A new organization takes its time zone, the day its week starts and its working days from your browser. Change them in Settings › General › Working defaults.
- A new organization starts a 14-day Business trial. See /help/settings/plans-and-subscription.
- You start in the teams at the top. The teams below start empty: add people to them from each team's page. A board that could not be made can be made later from its team's page.
- A link someone sent you opens from "Join with an invite link" in the page's … menu.
Look at an example company first
To see a filled organization before you build your own, choose "Explore an example company" in the workspace menu. It makes an organization marked Example, with teams, made-up people in different roles and example work filed under those teams. The made-up people cannot sign in, be invited or receive anything. "Remove the example company" takes the whole thing away again, with everything you added inside it - the dialog lists what that is first.
If something goes wrong
- "Create organization" is missing: the Organizations module is off for you, or your plan does not include it.
- A team's first board was not made: make it later from the team's page; the page says why it could not be made.
- You created work in the wrong workspace: ownership cannot be changed afterwards. Check the workspace control before you create. See /help/organizations/what-an-organization-owns.
