See what an organization owns
Which items belong to the organization or to you, and why you cannot move them.
In short
Every item belongs to exactly one workspace, fixed when you create it. Made while an organization is your workspace, it is the organization's, even though you manage it. Made in your Personal Workspace, it is yours alone. It does not move between the two, except a board, which a manager can move (see /help/boards/move-and-archive).
Before you start
- Who: any member.
- Plan: what you create counts toward the plan of the workspace that owns it.
- First: check the workspace control before you create.
Steps
- Before you create something, check the workspace control in the header.
- In the create dialog, read the line that says who it will start visible to.
- After creating it, read the "Visible to" line under its title.
Result: the item is in the workspace you meant, open to the people you meant.
Good to know
- Who created an item is recorded separately: in an organization, the maker manages the item through their own share, but the organization owns it.
- Organization items leave your lists when you switch away and return when you switch back.
- Under no team, a board or an API project starts open to everyone in the organization.
Example: Maya, a Member at Acme, creates Side project in her Personal Workspace and Sprint 12 while Acme is active. Acme never sees Side project. If she leaves Acme, Sprint 12 stays with Acme - and if she was the only one who managed it, it is released for an administrator to give a manager.
If something goes wrong
- You created it in the wrong workspace: ownership cannot be changed afterwards. Create it again in the right workspace. A board is the one exception: you can move it (see /help/boards/move-and-archive).
- More people can open it than you meant: open its Share dialog and choose who can open it. See /help/organizations/sharing.
