Connect Slack
Post to Slack channels with your own Slack app, one channel per team if you want.
In short
Connect your Slack workspace once for the organization. Teams then get channels of their own, and every schedule and monitor can alert there.
Before you start
- Who: someone who may manage the organization's connections - owners and admins have it by default.
- Plan: every plan can connect chat. It counts as one connection.
- First: on api.slack.com, create an app, add the bot scope chat:write, install it to your workspace and copy its Bot User OAuth Token.
- In Slack: invite the app to each channel it should post to, with /invite @your-app.
The bot token
- Open your organization, then Settings › "Connections", and press "Connect a chat workspace".
- Choose "Slack". Read what you need and press "Next".
- Paste the bot token. It starts with xoxb-.
- Type a channel to check with, such as #alerts.
- Press "Check this step". One test message is posted to that channel.
Finish
- Name the connection and press "Connect".
Route the organization and its teams to channels
- On the connection, press "Channels", then "Add a channel".
- Give it a name your people will recognize, and the channel.
- Leave "Who posts here" on the whole organization, or choose a team to give it a channel of its own.
- Tick the workspace events the channel should hear.
- Press "Save", then "Send a test". The channel's line says what became of its last message.
- A team's records go to its own channel, and to the organization's while it has none.
- Schedules and monitors offer every channel beside your webhooks, under "Alert channels".
- A channel that keeps failing is switched off and says why. Fix it, then switch it on again under "Change".
Decisions in the channel
A message about a waiting decision opens that decision in {{brand}}, where the signed-in person confirms it. Nobody decides from an anonymous button.
If something fails
- "The chat service did not take the test message": check the token, and that the app was invited to the channel.
- The app is in a private channel: invite it there. Slack hides private channels from an app that is not in them.
