Sign in with a passkey
Use your fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of typing a password.
In short
A passkey lets you sign in with your fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of typing a password. It also counts as two-step sign-in, so it never asks for a code.
Before you start
- Who: anyone signed in.
- Plan: none. You can hold up to 10 passkeys.
- First: a browser and device that can make passkeys, and your password.
Add a passkey
- Open Settings › "Sign-in & security" and find "Passkeys".
- Press "Add a passkey".
- Type a "Name" you will recognize, such as My laptop, and your password. Press "Continue".
- Follow your device's prompt. "Passkey added." confirms it.
- Next time, open "Other ways to sign in" in the sign-in dialog and press "Sign in with a passkey".
Remove a passkey
- Press "Remove" beside the passkey.
- Confirm with your password and press "Remove". "Passkey removed." confirms it.
Good to know
- You can hold up to 10 passkeys.
- After you remove one, your password and your other passkeys keep working.
- Adding or removing a passkey emails you at a confirmed address, so you notice if it was not you.
If something goes wrong
- "This browser cannot make passkeys. Open Settings on a device that can.": use a browser or device that supports passkeys.
- "That passkey could not be added. Start again, and finish the prompt on your device within a few minutes.": start again and answer the device prompt sooner.
- "The passkey prompt was closed or timed out.": press the button again when you are ready.
- "This account already has the most passkeys it can hold. Remove one to add another."
- "That passkey was not accepted. Try again, or sign in with your email and password."
