Reset or change your password
Get a reset link by email, set a new password and know what it ends.
In short
Forgot your password? Ask for a reset link by email and choose a new one. Setting a new password signs you out on every device, so only you can get back in.
Before you start
- Who: anyone with an account.
- Plan: none.
- First: access to the inbox of the email address on the account.
Reset a forgotten password
- In the sign-in dialog press "Forgot password?".
- Type your email and press "Send reset link".
- Open the email "Reset your {{brand}} password" and press its button.
- Type the new password in "New password" and again in "Confirm new password".
- Press "Set new password". "Password updated" means it worked; sign in with it.
To change a password you know, open Settings › Sign-in & security, find "Password" and press "Send me a reset link". It sends the same email.
Good to know
- The answer is the same whether or not an account exists for the address, and one email is sent per five minutes.
- The link works once, for 60 minutes.
- A new password ends every session on every device, this one included, within about half a minute. It also clears any sign-in wait from failed attempts.
If something goes wrong
- "That reset link is no longer valid": it was used, is more than an hour old or was replaced. Press "Send a new link".
- "This link is incomplete": your mail program cut the link. Use the link in the email as it is, or ask for a new one.
- "The two passwords don't match yet.": type the same password in both fields.
- No email arrives: check spam, and wait five minutes before asking again.
